《生物医学杂志》每年出版6期临床和生物医学科学各领域的同行评审期刊，作者来自国际。与大多数开放获取期刊对读者免费但对作者不收费不同，《生物医学杂志》不收取订阅、投稿、处理或发表稿件的费用，也不收取照片的彩色复制费，临床研究、临床试验的记述、生物标志物研究、人类病原体的表征等都在期刊的范围之内，还有模式物种如大肠杆菌、秀丽隐杆线虫、黑腹果蝇和小家鼠揭示了与人类健康相关的分子、细胞和组织的功能。然而，关于其他物种的文章可以发表，如果它们有助于我们理解生物学的基本机制。一个高引用的国际编辑委员会确保及时发表手稿。编辑们委托对生物医学科学的最新进展进行评论。
