聚合物降解和稳定性涉及降解反应及其控制,这是现代聚合物技术的许多不同方面的从业者的主要关注点。降解反应发生在加工过程中,当聚合物受到热、氧和机械应力时,以及在材料的使用寿命期间,当氧和阳光是最重要的降解媒介时。在更专业的应用中,降解可由高能辐射、臭氧、大气污染物、机械应力、生物作用、水解和许多其它影响引起。如果聚合物的技术和应用要继续发展,就必须了解这些反应和稳定过程的机理。因此,这类研究的报告是本杂志的主要功能。然而,在聚合物技术方面也有新的发展,其中降解过程找到了积极的应用。例如,可光降解的塑料现在是可利用的,聚合物产品的回收将变得越来越重要,降解和燃烧研究涉及到与聚合物材料有关的火灾危险的定义,微电子工业在其电路制造中极其依赖于聚合物降解。聚合物的性能也可以通过固化和接枝等方法来改善,这些方法的化学性质可能与在其他环境中引起物理劣化的化学性质密切相关。
