新音乐研究杂志(JNMR)发表的材料,增加我们对音乐和音乐过程的理解,通过系统的,科学的和技术的手段。该杂志上发表的研究是创新的,以经验为基础的,经常,但不完全,使用定量方法。文章既有音乐相关性,又有科学严谨性,给出了完整的技术细节。对所讨论的音乐或音乐行为没有任何限制:流行音乐、多元文化音乐、西方古典音乐经典等,都在杂志的研究范围之内。文章涉及理论、分析、作曲、表演、音乐的使用、乐器和其他音乐技术。该期刊创办于1972年,最初的标题是《界面》,以反映其跨学科性质,借鉴了音乐学(包括音乐理论)、计算机科学、心理学、声学、哲学和其他学科。
